Begur Area Guide

The attractive hilltop medieval town of Begur, with its 11^th Century castle and breathtaking views stretching as far as Cap de Creus to the north and the snow capped Pyrenees to the north-west, is one of the Costa Brava’s most treasured gems.

Begur is renowned for its stunning architecture much of which was influenced by wealthy emigrants returning to Cataluña in the early 19^th Century after making their fortune in the West Indies.

Indeed, Begur still celebrates its historical links to the Americas with a three-day Cuban festival held in September every year, attracting visitors from all over Europe.

For many years now Begur has been a highly sought-after second home destination for wealthy Catalans from Barcelona and more recently for international buyers from across northern Europe.

The town really comes alive in the summer months as visitors flock to the picturesque and predominantly pedestrianised streets to enjoy the town’s fine selection of cafés, bars, restaurants and boutique shops. The town square hosts an outdoor market on a weekly basis throughout the year.

Begur, which lies approximately 200m above sea level, provides access to some of the Costa Brava’s most emblematic bays and beaches, and some of the most sought-after locations to buy Costa Brava real estate, including Pals, Sa Riera, Aiguafreda, Sa Tuna, Fornells and Aiguablava.

Begur and the surrounding area provides a superb offering of activities, both land and sea based, including scuba diving, snorkeling, sea kayaking, sailing, wind surfing, kite-surfing, horse riding, mountain biking, road cycling, tennis and golf (the town is less than 10km from 3 highly-rated golf courses). The nearest ski slopes of the Pyrenees are just 1hr 30mins away.

Access to Begur is another major attraction, being just 45km from Girona and its international airport, 130km from Barcelona and 110km from Perpignan airport in south-east France.

Property for sale in Begur

Costa Brava real estate to buy around Begur predominantly comprises of detached coastal villas. Planning restrictions are tight so there are no high rise buildings in this area of the Costa Brava, which means a limited supply of apartments.

It is possible, however, to buy apartments with communal swimming pools and/or gardens in the area around Playa de Pals.  

In the town of Begur itself, the real estate market primarily comprises of stone townhouses and apartments, though there is also a limited number of new developments within walking distance of the centre, offering terraced properties with communal swimming pools.

In common with the nearby bays of Tamariu and Llafranc, the limited size of the coastal villages around Begur (including Sa Riera, Aiguablava and Sa Tuna) combined with the hilly terrain make it difficult to find detached villas within walking distance of a beach. Buyers will find a good selection of properties, however, within a 2km – 3km drive of the nearest beach.

The average size detached villa to buy in this area will be of 3-4 bedrooms (250m2) with swimming pool and sea views and an average plot size of between 800m2 – 1200m2.
